Main constituents: piperidine alkaloids (lobeline), chelixonic acid

Main herbal actions: respiratory stimulant, expectorant, emetic, diaphoretic

Main medicinal uses: asthma, bronchitis, croup, pleurisy

Minor medicinal uses: nicotine addiction

Preparations: infusion: 1 tsp/cup water; 1:2 tincture: 1-10 gtt 1-6x/day

Contraindications: nervous prostration, shock, paralysis, pneumonia, fluid around lungs, heart disease, hypertension, pregnancy

Toxicity: nausea, vomiting; higher doses: weakness, stupor, tremors, paralysis, rapid breathing and pulse, hypothermia, sweating, unconsciousness, convulsions, coma, death
