Glycerin ~ Glycerine

Glycerin

from page 44 of Herbal Healing Mod 1 handouts 2012

Glycerine is also naturally sweet, and this is another feature that makes it excellent for children’s tinctures, since it can help to conceal the taste of bitter herbs.  It is completely nontoxic, and may have detoxifying properties of its very own. Also, since it is a natural byproduct of fat breakdown, and not a sugar, it does not raise blood sugar despite its sweetness.

Heart Tonics

Heart Tonics from slide 13 of Cardiovascular Mod 1.pdf

The term Heart Tonic is used differently in Western Herbalism than the other two systems.

  1. In Western Herbalism, a tonic means something that has to do with something, so this means it has something to do with benefiting the heart in some way.
  2. In the Asian systems, tonic has a much larger meaning, an herb that has wide spread action in the body, balancing, non-toxic food like used in relatively low dosages over a long period of time or over a lifetime.  Tonic is considered in Asian terms, a maintenance remedy.
