{"id":499,"date":"2013-05-18T17:40:10","date_gmt":"2013-05-19T00:40:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/herbalpedia.info\/Glossary\/?p=499"},"modified":"2013-05-23T21:35:17","modified_gmt":"2013-05-24T04:35:17","slug":"complex-regional-pain-syndrome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/herbalpedia.info\/Glossary\/?p=499","title":{"rendered":"Complex Regional Pain Syndrome"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Complex Regional Pain Syndrome<\/span><\/h2>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #008000;\">According to Wikipedia:<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a multidisciplinary syndrome, which often initially affects an arm or a leg and often spreads throughout the body.<\/p>\n<p>Recent evidence has led to the conclusion that Complex Regional Pain Syndrome is a multifactorial disorder with clinical features of <a title=\"Neurogenic inflammation\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neurogenic_inflammation\">neurogenic inflammation<\/a>, nociceptive sensitisation (which causes extreme sensitivity or <a title=\"Allodynia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Allodynia\">allodynia<\/a>), <a title=\"Vasomotor\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vasomotor\">vasomotor<\/a> dysfunction, and maladaptive <a title=\"Neuroplasticity\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neuroplasticity\">neuroplasticity<\/a>, generated by an aberrant response to tissue injury.<sup id=\"cite_ref-bodyinmind.org_3-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Complex_regional_pain_syndrome#cite_note-bodyinmind.org-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> Treatment is complicated, involving drugs, physical therapy, psychologic treatments and <a title=\"Neuromodulation\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neuromodulation\">neuromodulation<\/a> and usually unsatisfactory, especially if begun late.<\/p>\n<p>Type I was formerly known as <strong>reflex sympathetic dystrophy<\/strong> (RSD), Sudeck&#8217;s atrophy, <a title=\"Reflex neurovascular dystrophy\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reflex_neurovascular_dystrophy\">reflex neurovascular dystrophy<\/a> (RND), or algoneurodystrophy, does not have demonstrable nerve lesions. With the vast majority of patients diagnosed with CRPS being of this type, most of the literature thus refers to type I.<\/p>\n<p>Type II, formerly known as <strong>causalgia<\/strong>, has evidence of obvious nerve damage.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Symptoms:<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>These stages may not be time-constrained, and could possibly be event-related, such as ground-level falls or re-injuries in previous areas. It is important to remember that often the <a title=\"Sympathetic nervous system\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sympathetic_nervous_system\">sympathetic nervous system<\/a><sup id=\"cite_ref-rsdrx.com_46-1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Complex_regional_pain_syndrome#cite_note-rsdrx.com-46\">[46]<\/a><\/sup> is involved with CRPS, and the autonomic nervous system can go haywire&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Stage One <\/span><\/strong>: severe, burning pain<\/p>\n<ol>\n<ol>\n<li>Muscle spasm,<\/li>\n<li>joint stiffness,<\/li>\n<li>restricted mobility,<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>rapid <a title=\"Hair\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hair\">hair<\/a> and <a title=\"Nail (anatomy)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nail_%28anatomy%29\">nail<\/a> growth<\/strong>, and<\/li>\n<li>vasospasm (blood vessel spasms).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The vasospasm is that which causes the changes in the color and temperature of the skin. Some may experience hyperhydrosis (increased sweating). In mild cases this stage lasts a few weeks, in which it can subside spontaneously or respond rapidly to treatment (physical therapy, pain specialist)<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Stage Two<\/span> <\/strong>: more intense pain.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Swelling spreads,<\/li>\n<li>hair growth diminishes, nails become cracked, brittle, grooved, and spotty,<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a title=\"Osteoporosis\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Osteoporosis\">osteoporosis<\/a> becomes severe and diffuse,<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>joints thicken, and<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>muscles atrophy<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Stage Three<\/span><\/strong> :\u00c2\u00a0 irreversible changes in the skin and bones, while the pain becomes unyielding and may involve the entire limb. There is<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>marked muscle atrophy,<\/li>\n<li>severely limited mobility of the affected area, and<\/li>\n<li>\u00c2\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">flexor <a title=\"Tendon\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tendon\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">tendon<\/span><\/a> contractions<\/span><\/strong> (contractions of the muscles and tendons that flex the joints).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Occasionally the limb is displaced from its normal position, and marked bone softening and thinning is more dispersed.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #008000;\">One simple description from a healthcare practitioner &#8211; put into layman&#8217;s terms:<\/span><\/h4>\n<blockquote><p>RSD is like having a part of the body go in to shock. The involuntary nervous system which controls blood vessels and sweating goes in to hyper-drive. Blood vessels constrict, squeezing the blood toward the core of the body, as if the body is trying to protect itself from a life-threatening trauma or blood loss. The affected extremity becomes cold and painful.
